Wagon Shed

Perhaps the most captivating object found in the wagon shed is the Zuraw Wagon, an 18th century “tar grinder” wagon. The term “tar grinder” refers to the tar-like substance used to lubricate the wooden hubs. The Zuraw Wagon was completely handmade; even the original metals bolts were forged. The wagon was pulled by oxen and used in farming.

In 1975, the wagon was donated to Foxfire and is used as a teaching tool for various people groups. Such utilization aligns with the eighth Foxfire Core Practice. The eighth Core Practice addresses ways in which classroom activities serve audiences beyond the school, such as individuals, groups or the surrounding community, and, in doing so, evokes the learner’s heighten interest and best efforts.
