The building you currently see is the archive building. After collecting interviews, Foxfire students would have to process their own film in a traditional black room. Special chemicals were used to develop the film, and the students had to block all natural light during the process, or else the photographs would be ruined. The procedure is very meticulous, but produced many of the surviving documentation of Foxfire's legacy.

When the students were first beginning to take photographs and develop the film, they had to be conscious of every step. With more experience and guidance, these practices become engrained within their minds. This is similar to Foxfire's third Core Practice, which states the work teachers and learners do together clearly manifests the attributes of the academic principles involved, so those attributes become habits of mind.
