Moore House

Folk art is an important part of Appalachian culture as it reveals the creative workmanship of members in the community. Rag and corn shuck dolls were very popular since manufactured toys were expensive, and these dolls could be made from materials community members could easily access. Other examples of folk art include pottery and woodworking. There are some interesting pieces of wood sculpture including the miniature doll house.  While it does not depict a typical home of the time, each miniature item is a proportional representation of its equivalence in the real world.  Folk art allowed people to express their imagination and creativity, just as Foxfire exemplifies in the learning process in its sixth Core Practice.
